Almost everyone has seen the Carmax commercials where they talk about how bad customer service is these days. Though the commercials are a little ridiculous, they are right. What happened to the concept of "the customer is always right?" Clearly, it has been forgotten.
Having worked in retail, I have been on the other side. I was not happy or in the best mood everyday, but the customer never would have known.
As an employee, one of the biggest responsibilities is representing the company you work for. If an employee treats me like crap as a customer, I would assume that that I am not valuable to the company either.
The Customer Choice Awards, sponsored by American Express, voted Zappos. com the top retailer in customer service. The survey included over 30,000 participants across the United States. Following Zappos was Amazon, LL Bean, Overstock. com, Lands End, JC Penney, Kohl's, QVC, Nordstrom and Newegg.
I think that Chick-fil-A represents customer service at its finest. I have never had a bad experience. They are always friendly, admit mistakes and treats each customer individually. Wendy's, however, is a different story. Recently, I went to the location on Howell Mill with a couple of friends, and the cashier took one of their orders wrong. When she politely pointed out the mistake to the cashier, she rolled her eyes and made a big fuss about changing it. Unnecessary.
The McDonald's by Grady, frequented by many Georgia State students, is a nightmare customer service- wise. Their employees are un- friendly, the service is slow, and it is the only restaurant I know of that allows homeless people to ask for your food -- while you
are eating it.
Poor customer service can happen outside of retail and food places. One of the worse feelings is coming to campus and being treated like an inconvenience. As a freshman, I cannot even count how many times I went to certain offices at Georgia State looking for guidance, only to be talked down to. Eventually, I stopped asking for help.
The American Express Glob- al Customer Service barometer said that 70% of Americans will
spend more money with companies that pro- vide good customer service and 78% have not gone through with a purchase because of bad customer service.
Demanding good customer service is not wrong, whether it is from schools, restaurants, or retail shops. Asking for it in a disrespectful way, however, is wrong.
Treat other people the same way you want to be treated. Thanks Carmax.
