Ever since my freshmen year, graduation has always been the only thing on my mind. Now here I am three and a half years later and just when I think I can taste the satisfaction of graduation, GSU terminates fall commencements all together. As much as I love Georgia State and all the opportunities that I have been awarded throughout my years, I hate the communication between the students and the administration.
The fact that for the entire Spring semester it was rumored that the Fall 2011 commencement would be the last lets me know that the communication level towards the student body is too lax and unprofessional. I had to take it upon myself to call the graduation office for confirmation, only to receive more unclear answers. I was informed that the Fall 2011 commencement would indeed be the last commencement, yet they haven't announced it to the students.
It's irritating to be notified within six months of when I expect to graduate in Fall 2012 that now I will have to wait an entire year to actually have a ceremony, which would be May 2013. Although I will have my degree in hand by December 2012, the cancellation of the actual ceremony seems to have taken the joy out of graduating. Had the students been notified earlier, or maybe even if the administration notified us now, but allowed for one more fall commencement then people would be able to plan accordingly.
It's still unclear as to why GSU decided to cancel the commencement in the first place, I would think that keeping two graduations would be more cost effective for the university but I could be wrong. I just hope that in the future when more abrasive decisions are made that the administration attempts to notify students in enough time to properly plan and adjust.
