The non-profit organization Songs For Kids Foundation, will kick off its 10-day music marathon, 500 Songs For Kids on April 29th through May 8th at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta, GA. Proceeds benefit the Songs For Kids Foundation work with children’s hospitals and special needs kids camps. Songs For Kids Foundation brings musicians year round to all places where kids are in need, by enriching their lives through music.
This is the fourth year the event takes place. It brings in 500 different bands and/or musicians to perform the 500 Greatest Era-defining songs of all time.
According to Karen DeVault, 25, who has been volunteering her time to this foundation for the past two years, the idea of having 500 bands performing originated from Josh Rifkind, who is the founder and president of the organization.
“The idea of 500 songs originated in the fundraiser’s first year, when Rolling Stone magazine published their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, although the proceeding years the list was comprised by highly entertaining debates amongst the Foundations board.”
While the 10-day event occurs only in Georgia, the foundation has begun spreading its wings by expanding to California.
According to DeVault, the money that is received is allocated to produce the various programs Songs for Kids does for children hospitals and special needs kids camps. The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles’ has been one of Songs For Kids bigger expansions, with monthly events/visits.
“This money goes towards hospital performances and events, writing sessions, and even one-on-one bedside visits for the children. Some of them even get to make their own CD,” DeVault said.
Ticket prices are $10 at the door or can be bought in advance through ticketalternative.com. All proceeds go towards helping bring music to children in need.
Previous years 500 Songs For Kids has pulled in such acts as Butch Walker, Peter Stroud, Gavin Degraw, Cee-lo, Zac Brown Band, Meiko, Mute Math, Janelle Monae and more.
Local bands such as Modern Skirts, Dead Confederate, and Ponderosa will be performing. Singer-songwriter Angie Aparo will be making an appearance as well as The Greater Vavoom, to name a few.
“This is just a great way to raise money and get people excited and involved,” DeVault said.
“The importance of it all is to bring awareness to the foundation and its efforts. This is truly a really rocking time for a really amazing cause! It’s impossible not to be happy about what Josh, Kendra, Sanjay, and Justin have successfully and repeatedly pulled off.”
