The ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha-Latin Sorority and the Gamma Sigma Sigma-Service Sorority decided it was time for a haircut. They figured they could trim off a lock or two of their own hair in the name of love for the charity organization Locks of Love. The sororities decided to coordinate an effort together to benefit Locks of Love. The organization helps children who have lost their hair due to an illness. Many of the children that Locks of Love has assisted with finding hairpieces have a skin disease called Alopecia Areata. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that helps to restore a child's self-esteem and confidence through their appearance. Therefore, the ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha and Gamma Sigma Sigma came together to further the Locks of Love purpose. In November, prior to Thanksgiving break, the ladies, along with members of the campus community, donated hair and money to the organization. Cynthia Padilla, who is the president of the Lambda Theta Alpha chapter at Georgia State stated, "We felt that this initiative has not been done before at Georgia State and was an important one to being awareness to the charity and its purpose." Four ladies of Lambda Theta Alpha donated at least 10 inches of hair and the sorority donated $100 to Locks of Love. "We thought this was a noble cause that deserves attention and we truly support the great efforts of Locks of Love and its volunteers," said Karishma Saini, who is vice president of the chapter of Gamma Sigma Sigma at Georgia State. One sister of Gamma Sigma Sigma donated at least 10 inches. More sisters could not donate their hair because Locks of Love has a restriction that at least 10 inches must be donated. The sorority also donated money for the Locks of Love organization. Many children without a disease have self-esteem and confidence issues. Having a disease and losing their hair makes the problem much worse. Therefore, Locks of Love formed to restore self-esteem and confidence. Padilla added, "Especially for girls, they want long hair and in their eyes it makes them feel more 'normal' and keeps their mind off of their illness. As an organization of women we understand and sympathize with the feelings of self-esteem and confidence." Gamma Sigma Sigma is a service sorority that believes in service to mankind. Saini explains, "Zeta Tau Chapter believes that children are our leaders of tomorrow and many of our activities support children's educational, leadership, and health initiatives. The Locks of Love program ties two of our philanthropic passions together." The Lambda Theta Alpha ladies will be hosting another Locks of Love event in 2007. All sororities volunteer and donate monetary funds to help promote service in their communities. To see two sororities help the Locks of Love organization, which is not their individual philanthropic organizations, is inspirational. It highlights some of the great deeds that Georgia State students are doing to better the lives of others. "We knew that we could guarantee participants who could donate their hair and educate the student body in other ways they could help the community," said Padilla. To donate to Locks of Love, look for another event in 2007 or visit their website at www.locksoflove.org.
