The Delta Xi chapter of Alpha Xi Delta here at Georgia State hosted their annual philanthropy week this past February. The ladies of Delta Xi raised over $1,000 to donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, an organization the chapter chose due to one of its sisters being personally affected since childhood.

The week is dedicated to raising money and serving the community and also bringing the Greek community at Georgia State closer and making it stronger.

Last week on April 2, also known as World Autism Day, Alpha Xi Delta revealed a new national philanthropic opportunity - Autism Speaks. The cause is the nation's largest advocacy organization for autism, dedicated to research and public awareness.

"The Delta Xi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta is excited about our new partnership with Autism Speaks. We look forward to directing our time and talent to raise awareness on campus about autism," said Ashlyn Smith, Delta Xi Chapter President.

Autism Speaks also helps to raise the funds necessary to support the extensive research that will one day allow scientists to discover the cause of the condition and hopefully the cure. Autism, deemed a national public health crisis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here in Atlanta, is a brain disorder affecting an individual's sociability and one in every 150 children in the United States is diagnosed. Autism has increased nearly ten times within the past decade and it affects almost four times as many boys than girls.

The sorority has partnered with Autism Speaks in order to aid efforts to raise money and awareness in support of research, and give hope to the hundreds of families throughout the country who are affected. In particular, members are looking forward to being able to participate in the annual Walk Now for Autism event, which operates much like Relay For Life (the annual fundraising event hosted by the American Cancer Society). It is North America's largest autism walk, and Delta Xi plans on being an enthusiastic supporter of this year's event taking place in Atlantic Station on May 3.

Alpha Xi Delta is a national sorority that's nearly 116 years old and has over 150,000 initiated members. As an organization, Alpha Xi Delta has always been committed to the community, especially in regards to the needs of children. Nationally, the sorority has provided their communities with over $3 million in aid and over 800,000 hours in service.

Alpha Xi Delta is unique in this aspect of their philanthropy work - each individual chapter of the sorority was able to look within its own community and serve the children as the chapter members saw fit.
