Georgia State professors Pearl McHaney, Megan Sexton and Perry Binder were among roughly 300 authors that participated in the Fourth Annual Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival Sept. 4 through Sept. 6.

The festival was held at different venues around Decatur, and there were a variety of free activities for attendees. Activities included writing conferences, cooking demos and book and poetry readings. The event was sponsored by the AJC and the Dekalb Medical Center.

Pearl McHaney is an expert on short story writer and novelist Eudora Welty, according to the Georgia State News page. McHaney is an associate professor of English here, and edited the book Eudora Welty as Photographer. At the book festival, she presented parts of her compilation "Occasions: Selected Writings."

Creative writing teacher and Five Points literary magazine Co-Editor Meghan Sexton also participated in the festival. This was Sexton's fourth time attending the event, according to Georgia State press releases. She is a published poet and read one of her poems at this year's festival.

Perry Binder is a legal studies professor in the Robinson College of Business. His book is titled Unlocking Your Rubber Room: 44 Off-the-Wall Lessons to Lighten and Transform Everyday Life. The book is separated into four parts, each having a life lesson on how to better your life through education. Binder said he based his stories on the experiences he had from the courtroom and the classroom.

"It's really 44 stories and lessons from frantic courtrooms and hilarious classrooms. Crazy things come up," Binder said. "Based on the stories I had from the courtroom and the stories I had from the classroom I figured I had something to say."

His book can be found in the Georgia State Bookstore, Park Place Bookstore, several Barnes and Noble stores and online at Amazon.com. Binder will speak to the GSU Pre-law club on Thursday, Oct. 1 from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m in GCB room 1081.
